An accordian style book with wood covers. Front side appears to have some water damage. Twenty cases each has a hand colored illustration, two per page. Appears to be water color and colored pencil on silk with a silk background.
Outside dimensions 8 1/4" X 6. Upon opening there is a tear at the top and a knotch size hole at the inseam. The previous owner told me it is in Cantonese and it is also in English. It looks like the author's name is along the inside of the board but I can't read Cantonese. Ships with delivery confirmation where available.

Liu was a tragic figure in mid 20th century Communist China, a long time associate of Chairman Mao Tse-tung, who incurred the wrath of the mercurial Chairman by having the courage to speak out against Mao's policies in the Great Leap Forward, a disastrous program that resulted in the death by starvation of millions of Chinese peasants. Mao never forgave Liu's brave opposing stance and purged him in the opening months of the Cultural Revolution some eight years later, about the time of publication of this booklet. Title "Momotaro" in transliterated Japanese on front cover. Silk string-bound plain paper book, approximately 4.75 x 7.2 inches. Binding along left edge consists of two sets of four holes stabbed through the paper, with white silk threads forming an X on the back and two knots on the front. Spine is not covered. Color woodblock illustrations on covers and many pages. Front cover has illustration of a Samurai and animals in Samurai costumes at a gated entrance. Covers wrinkled and soiled, with a one-inch tear at the top of the front cover that goes through the title, and a spot of white paint in sky. String binding intact. Corners worn. Back cover is soiled and illustrated pattern barely visible. The Dutch emblematic lion with sword and shield lower right. Batavia was built by the Dutch in 1619 to establish their colonial power as the Dutch East India Company (VOC).

An attractive 2-volume Meiji period (1880) reprint of Minko Tachibana's 1771 classic Saiga Shokunin Burui (Various Classes of Artisan in Colored Pictures), with stunning woodblock illustrations in which the colors have been applied by stencils (a hybrid technique known as kappazuri-e). The outer wraps have moderate rubbing and one has a faint droplet stain on the front cover. The interior contents are in fine condition, with beautiful bright colour plates absent of any foxing or soiling. {Swordsmith depicted}.. Paperback. Very Good. 4to. Collectible.
