Joseph Paxton was a 19th-century English gardener who is best-remembered for cultivating the banana in the Western world. In 1834, Paxton began publishing a botanical periodical – the 'Magazine of Botany' – in which Paxton and other writers provided in depth research, discussions, and information on all types of plants. And while the descriptions themselves and thorough, the full-page, color illustrations make the volumes from this work one of the most desirable botany works from the first half of the 19th-century.

Small octavo, pp lxvi, 429, slight age-toning and very slight occasional marks, all edges gilt, the title page slightly foxed, lacking the preceeding page (a half-title or a blank ?), marbled endpapers, full contemporary polished calf, a little rubbed and knocked, the front and rear covers with two gilt lines, the spine richly decorated gilt, the joints creased, the spine a little more rubbed. RARE. ["The first substantial botanical book published in South Africa, ........and of a remarkably high standard" - Gunn & Codd. Harvey, who was already planning his immense Flora Capensis, hoped that the 'Genera' would "be sent to resident doctors, clergymen etc scattered about the country to excite their idle minds to send specimewns in to Cape Town. Ill-health twice returned him to Britain, and in 1842 he left South Africa for good. He later completed the first three volumes of Flora Capensis.]. First Edition. Full Leather. Very Good.

Original 18th century binding. Contains twelve folding plates with slight offsetting. Front board detached. Back board loose. Spine cover missing. Foxing and age toning throughout the text. Former owner's name and date on front pages. Book plates and text still legible with delightful "long S" font script popular in the late 1700s.

Joseph Pitton de Tournefort was a 17th-century botanist who is best known for his work 'Elements of Botany'. In this book, Tournefort made important contributions to botanical nomenclature, identifying the divisions in flowering plants and make distinctions between genus and species.
