London: Cassell Petter Galpin 5 vols First to Fifth Series, all in uniform blue cloth with gilt and black titling and decoration and with an inset "window" on upper board in which in all but the first series is a different flower illustration painted onto a gilt background, In the first series the flower illustration has worn off somewhat, Each vol has 40 coloured plates, and a title vignette in line, Some of the bindings may be slightly faded or rubbed at extremities but all are still VG ,some vols may have just the earliest hints of foxing to a few pages, and the front hinges are starting on some of the vols, mainly showing in weakness where the frontis opens, tissue guards are present as are original endpapers. The corners are a little bumped, and there is some pale spotting along the fore edges and top edge of the binding. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. Prior owner's 1954 inscription on the front flyleaf of "William Lanier Hunt" INSCRIBED on the title page, "From the Author." The text is a little toned but generally clean. There is some offsetting from the plates. Contains 48 uncolored plates. William Lanier Hunt (1906-1996), the 1950s owner, was the "Dean of Southern Horticulture." He donated land along the Morgan Creek in southern Orange County, NC to the North Carolina Botanical Garden and is now known as the Hunt Arboretum.

Berlin, Paul Parey, 1894. 25x17cm. Hardcover. With 104 chromolithographed plates - each with 1 page of text in German, and 1 blank sheet for notes. The text is in German, in gothic style font, including the info about the fruit varieties and the advertisements in the back.
About the plate illustrations:The beautiful color plates were printed in the Lithographic Institute of W. Müller in Gera, who also made the master drawings. 53 apple and 51 pear varieties are illustrated and described with 1 to 3 whole fruits and 1 slice view.
Condition: The plates are bright and gorgeous and in excellent condition, without foxing or tears and suitable for framing. The cover has some fading and light staining commensurate with the age of the book.

This complete two volume set of the flora of New Mexico is in Very Good Condition. It is very scarce, and an excellent reference for flora of the North American Soutwest. There is a former owner's name and gift inscription on the volumes, but they are otherwise without writing or notation. The volumes are illustrated with 463 figures and 1300 maps.
