I.N. Kushnerev & Ko., Moskva (Moscow), 1892. Printed boards, no dust jacket. Good /No Jacket. A well-used copy of the rare first edition of a popular Russian flora. The author was Piotr Feliksovich Maevsky (1851-1892). Significant edgewear to cover, internally sound with minimal tanning of paper. Owner's signature and oil spot on ffep (M. Kirshbaum?), another on end paper (V. Rikovshky?) with oaktree bookplate of Heino Ross. Spine sl. frayed at top edge, some insect damage to glued areas. The text contains keys to genera and species, generic descriptions and Russian and Latin names of genera and species, summaries of distribution (by local government region) and habitat, flowering times, and selected line drawings mostly showing both the whole plant and flowers or fruits. A compact yet comprehensive flora which went through several editions, a third (edited by B. Fedchenko) in 1902 and another in 1917, an 8th (with a slightly different title) in 1954 and a 9th (edited by B.K. Shishkin) in 1964.… Read More

A nicely preserved copy with untrimmed edges, title blind-inscribed (by hand) on spine. xvi, 151, xiv, plate facing p. xv, 153-255 pp. The first Welsh local flora, particularly noted for its appendix of Welsh names of plants.

A fine atlas of medicinal plants in coloured colllotype, based on early color photograph of plants. A technique rarely applied. See Nissen, BBI, 1 252 ff. The text for the foreign platns was supplied by author's brother, Max, the director of the botanical garden at München. -- (Cancelled library stamp on title and preface; lower corner of title very slightly damaged).

Contemporary half morocco, gilt, raised bands to spine. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Corners rubbed. Index to Part II and pp141-144 originally published in smaller state (8vo), expertly relaid to quarto. Comprehensively cataloguing the origins, date of introduction and British gardens and their owners of foreign introductions during the golden age of plant-hunting, the Floral Register was the resource for all newly introduced plants.
Benjamin Maund (1790-1864) botanist and horticulturist, "he prospered as a bookseller, stationer, printer, bookbinder, publisher, and chemist in a combination normal for the time". Second edition. Illustrated with one folding plate (a plan of a forcing frame), small octavo, pp xxxvi, 428, + errata leaf, edges untrimmed, original boards, rubbed and a little worn, recently re-backed with paper spine and label. There is offsetting from the plate to the opposite page of text and some foxing to the plate and occasionally throughout the book, but this is not heavy. The section on vine cultivation has seven pages on which some instructions have been underlined in ink, but this has been done so neatly that it almost looks as though it it part of the printing. Illustrated with a large folding map frontispiece (with, as usual, tears and creases at the upper join, now neatly repaired), nine large full-page plates on heavy card. many small text images from photographs, quarto, pp 219, slight age-toning and marking, some inner joints rather cracked and weak, the last third of the book has rather damp-wrinkled pages, with light staining on the last few pages, original decorated cloth with paper inlay, bevelled edges, a bit rubbed and marked, the spine dull and age-toned andpulled at the head and tail, the upper cover slightly unevenly age-toned. Three volumes, small quarto, pp 112, [144], 189, some foxing throughout, wide-margined copies, uncut and partially unopened, simply bound in brown paper, parts II & III still have the original lower cover. C.E. Hubbard's copy. [Hubbard was the dean of the British agrostologists, with an encyclopedic knowledge of the world's grasses. He did not follow the increasingly popular view of recognizing four to six subfamilies by listing only two (Festucoideae and Panicoideae) and 27 tribes. Trinius prepared a summary of grass classification and synonymy, in which he listed 2457 species, along with their author and place of publication - this was a cornerstone of modern grass taxonomy.]. Knight was the brother of Payne Knight, and the second President of the Royal Horticultural Society. Attention was first called to his work in 1795 by the publication of the results of his research into the propagation of fruit trees and the diseases prevalent among them. He used 10,000 acres (4,000 ha) of land he inherited to conduct breeding of plants including strawberries, cabbages and peas and built an extensive greenhouse.
