Two volumes, 13 engraved plates (of which 11 are of plants), pp xx, 396; 367, (35), lacking the half-titles, a general age-toning throughout, a few very minor marginal tears, there is some marginal staining in the second volume which I would not call offensive, otherwise this is a very good wide-margined copy, uncut and unpressed; bound in a recent full panelled calf, blind-stamped, raised bands on the spines with a red labels, very good. [Osbeck (1723 - 1805) was a Swedish explorer, naturalist and an apostle of Carl Linnaeus. He was born in the parish of Hålanda on Västergötland and studied at Uppsala with Carolus Linnaeus. Joseph Pitton de Tournefort was a 17th-century botanist who is best known for his work 'Elements of Botany'. In this book, Tournefort made important contributions to botanical nomenclature, identifying the divisions in flowering plants and make distinctions between genus and species. This 1719 Latin edition entitled 'Institutiones rei Herbariae', collects and describes nearly 7,000 different plant species many of which include impressive botanical illustrations.
Included with this volume are letters written and signed by famed French botanists Louis Claude Marie Richard (1754–1821) and his son, Achille Richard (1794–1852). Both were esteemed botanists of their time and taught at the French National Academy of Medicine.

Small thick quarto, pp (12), 520, [26], illustrated with an engraved title page, an engraved frontispiece (though here bound in after the preliminary pages) and 45 plates (of 46 - lacking the plate which occupied pages 55/56), some age-toning and slight foxing throughout, the plates a bit more browned but without the intense browning often found in this book, overall quite tight internally, one preliminary page and pages 395-398 protruding slightly and a little chipped and frayed at the margins, full vellum binding (probably original), rather used and marked but quite sound and firm, the upper and lower cover a bit warped and bowed, the front hinge cracked but firm and showing traces of old glue. Through the mid-18th-century, large collections of knowledge were relegated to specific areas of study like law, medicine, or religion. However, Denis Diderot's 'Encyclopedie'
changed the public's knowledge base as well as setting a standard for future generations of acquiring knowledge on many different subjects. This was the first encyclopedia to include contributions from many different named writers. It also was the first encyclopedia to describe work-related topics like agriculture, engineering, cooking, and trade.
One of the aspects that made this work so desirable was the incredible, detailed full-page engravings. In fact, the illustrations themselves were so sought-after that they were of published on their own apart from the encyclopedia.

Theophrastus was a 4th-century BC Greek philosopher known for his studies in metaphysics and logic of Aristotle and Plato. One of his remaining works was 'On the Causes of Plants', an extensive botanical treatise. In fact, this work is considered to be one of the most important works of botany from the middle ages. Theophrastus describes plant growth, instruction on planting and harvesting, soils and fertilizers, farming tools, and the medicinal properties of many plants.

This 1529 edition of Theophrastus' 'Plants' was published in Lutetia, or Paris, by Christian Wechel.
