Faint dust soiling to spine, trace of normal offsetting to endsheet gutters, otherwise a fine copy in lightly worn slipcase. First edition. Introduction and captions to the illustrations by Bernard Windeler. Illustrated with twenty-three original copper engravings by Wadsworth, printed from the plates, both full-page and vignette, and some delicately handcolored. One of four hundred and fifty copies. Wadsworth was, of course, one of the original signators to the Vorticist manifesto and regrettably that tradition shows through only occasionally and briefly in these draftsman-like renderings. Of particular interest to this cataloguer is the probability that the author of the captions is the same B.C. Windeler whose ELIMUS, with illustrations by Dorothy Shakespear, was published in Pound's INQUEST series three years earlier.

This is a good copy, somewhat browned internally throughout with the occasional worm in the first 80 pages and sometimes affecting single letters but not objectionable. William Morehead's bookplate is pasted inside the front board. The very nice paneled and speckled contemporary binding has been rebacked. One of reportedly only 60 signed copies offered for sale by the Tate Gallery Bookshop at the time. SIGNED "Jake and Dinos Chapman" at the half-title. Exceedingly scarce, I do not recall one of these signed copies being offered for sale previously. 1/4 cloth. pp. 149, illustrated. Lower corners bumped but otherwise a Fine copy indeed.

Very good copy of Richard Dagley's first foray into caricatureWith 26 comical illustrations from the life of a young wastrel in Regency England, most engraved by William Henry BrookesWith 2-page dedication, 3-page advertisement, 32-page essay Miscellaneous Observations on the Ludicrous in Art all by Dagley, and 4-page introduction in poetry and 180-page poem by Gaspey. According to the preface, it was the author of Flim-Flams! [Isaac D'Israeli], who encouraged Dagley to experiment with comedy. Later, "an ingenious friend" suggested he used the word "Taking" to stimulate further practice. The result is seen here in these commissioned illustrations for Thomas Gaspey's doggerel adventure.A young student, Tom Takeall, ignores his father's advice and sets off on a disastrous series of adventures. Sharp and others.

"In each number of which will be given a Portrait of some Celebrated Personage, some interesting Historical Subject and some curious Perspective View executed by the most capital artists of Great Britain and calculated to enrich the Cabinets of the Curious or to ornament the Apartments of Persons of Real Taste."

Charlotte Gower, fl. 1860-1880, was a British botanical artist known for her collaboration with Robert Hogg.
Worthington George Smith (1835-1917) was an English cartoonist, book illustrator, archaeologist, plant pathologist, and mycologist. His botanical works include Gardener's Chronicle from 1869, Mushrooms and Toadstools (1879), Illustrations of the British Flora (1880), etc.
