1780 softcover pamphlet in very good condition. Paginates: (iii)-viii, [2], (9)-101, blank, lacking the half-title (if it ever existed). Second edition. Pencil notes of prior book seller on title page, no other markings, creases or interior problems. Bound in quality laid paper wraps. A very nice copy. The paper is wonderful example of the paper making trade in 1780's London. Content is scathing satire and complaints about, among other things, the loss of the colonies. A nice copy. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Notes: This title may be found in the libraries of Thomas Jefferson & Benjamin Franklin. More Notes: This is how most books came from the printer and it was up to the buyer to decide on further binding. This appears to have never been bound.

Attention is usually paid to the prowess of England's soldiers, the skill and energy of her commerce, the shrewd brilliance of her diplomacy. But here the noted historian John Brewer turns to England's creation of what he calls the modern fiscal-military state, which, he argues, was the single most important transformation in government in early modern times.Brewer's brilliant analysis makes clear that the drastic increase in Britain's military involvement (and success) in Europe and the expansion of her commercial and… Read More

"Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."
Relatively few garments survive from before the eighteenth century, and the history of costume in the preceding centuries must therefore rely to a great extent on literary and visual evidence. This book, the first of its kind, examines Stuart England through the mirror of dress. It argues that both artistic and literary sources can be read and decoded for important information on dress and the way it was perceived in a period of immense political, social, and cultural change.Focusing on the rich visual culture of the seventeenth century, including portraits, engravings, fashion plates, and sculpture, and on literary sources poetry, drama, essays, sermons the distinguished historian of dress Aileen Ribeiro creates a fascinating… Read More

Published to coincide with the major exhibition at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace, George III & Queen Charlotte: Patronage, Collecting and Court Taste reconsiders the role of George III, Queen Charlotte and their family in encouraging the arts within the court and in society as a whole during the 50 years of the King's reign. Illustrated by a range of works of art in the Royal Collection, the book reveals aspects of George III as father, monarch and man of letters that have generally been overlooked, and demonstrates his true importance as one of the most wide-ranging, influential and far-sighted collectors of his day. It is an important contribution to studies of the fine and decorative arts in the Georgian period, and will… Read More
