New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1897. Hardcover. Very good. Second and preferred edition, with folding map. 25.5 cm, 283 pp. in original pictorial cloth boards, beautifully illustrated with 25 full-page photogravures and many additional illustrations in the text. Boards are lightly spotted, but still quite attractive; internally clean and sound. The topographical map, titled "Map of the Lake Louise Region Showing Part of the Summit Range of the Canadian Rocky Mountains" is laid in at the front and is in fine condition. The author was an early explorer of the Canadian Rockies who made several first ascents, including Temple, Aberdeen, Niblock, and Indefatigable. In a 1941 article in the American Alpine Journal, climber J. Henry Scattergood described the book as "delightful," praising Wilcox's "exquisite descriptions of Lake Louise, Valley of the Ten Peaks (then called by him Desolation Valley) and neighborhood." More recently, Zac Robinson and Stephen Slemon wrote in Alpinist magazine (No. 50, 2015)… Read More

1892 Remington Illustrated 1ed Canada's Frontier Wilderness Exploration INDIANS

Julian Ralph's "On Canada's Frontier," illustrated by Frederic Sackrider Remington, takes readers on a fascinating journey through the emerging territories of Western Canada at the turn of the 19th century. Ralph's work strays from traditional narratives of the time about well-established Canadian cities and instead delves into the raw landscapes, vibrant cultures, and lives of the indigenous people, missionaries, fur traders, and fresh settlers in the country's western expanse. This book chronicles Ralph's personal explorations, firsthand observations, and rigorous studies, capturing the unique spirit of nation-building, the enduring charm of the wilderness, and the evolving human story. Readers are treated to 70 evocative illustrations, enriching this rich tapestry of life on Canada's frontier.

(Dow, Niagara pages 127-130; Field 687; Lande 433; Sabin 31489; TPL 805) First edition.
This work is of more than strictly Canadian interest--most of the book is dedicated to "a comparative view of the manners and customs of the Indian nations of North and South America," including a 31-page Algonquin dictionary.
George Heriot arrived in Canada in 1792, the beginning of a quarter-century association with the colony. In his first years. In 1796, he returned to Britain, travelling along the south coast and in Wales before spending some months at the University of Edinburgh. After preparing some paintings for exhibition at the Royal Academy, he left for Canada.
