[AMERICANA - 19th CENTURY EPHEMERA] AMERICAN COW MILKER MACHINE POSTER, ORIGINAL. Buffalo, NY: Express Printing Company for the American Cow Milking Machine Co. [n.d. ca. 1865]. 42 x 26 3/4 inches. Woodblock printing: Boldest typeface measures 10 inches tall. L. O. Colvin's "American Cow Milker" was patented in 1860 as the first use of teat cups with a vacuum. The milker was used in England, but the constant vacuum pressure caused problems with the cows' teats. He sold the patent in England for about $5,000, after selling over 1,500 machines. He continued to make improvements and was more successful in America where this undated broadside was published. "Triumphant Success | The Most Important and Valuable Invention of the 19th Century" proclaims the headline; the company is seeking business men to invest/sell the machines; the farmer is being courted. We offer a large archive of fireworks labels dating to the 1970s, including 175+ labels collected from various manufacturers and countries, mostly India and China, but with a few from Japan and even America. The archive is contained in two binders labeled "FIREWORKS LABELS ALBUM NO. 3" (containing 82 labels mostly of Indian origin), and "FIREWORKS LABELS ALBUM NO 4." (99 labels, mostly of Chinese/Macau origin with a few from Japan and America). This archive was collected in the 1970s (presumably by someone in the fireworks business), and placed in old photograph albums with the "magnetic glue" format which has transferred to the backs of many of the labels. In some cases lines are visible on the front of the labels. We've left the labels in the albums as is, partly because there are some penciled notes on some pages indicating a date or (in album 4) "PGII CONV" presumably for the Pyrotechnics Guide annual conventions. Terre Haute, IN: Terre Haute Fairgrounds Speedway, 1958. A fantastic piece of Midwest dirt track racing history, SIGNED by legendary drivers A.J. Foyt, Eddie Sachs. Elmer George, Tommy Hinnershitz, Ed Elisian , and Joe Barzda, with 2 more signatures too faint for me to decipher. SIGNED in ink front cover by Foyt, George, Sachs, and Hinnershitz, in pencil ( right margin) by Barzda, at rear cover in ink by Ed Elisian, and at his photo on page 7 in ink again by George. A.J. Foyt- the first 4-time winner of the Indy 500, a true racing legend. Eddie Sachs- known as the "Clown Prince of Auto Racing", who was killed in the 1964 Indy 500 won by Foyt, Elmer George- who retired from racing in 1963 and then served as vice-president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Manuscript leaves numbered 38 through 255, plus 2 leaves of introduction. Folio (12 1/2" x 8 1/2") bound in later quarter calf over green marbled boards.The first page is captioned "Títulos y sucesiones de la casa llamada de Santa Inés, situada a la entrada de la ciudad de Tlalpan," or "Title deeds and inheritances of the house named after Santa Inés, situated at the entrance of the city of Tlalpan." The volume contains numerous documents which trace the succession of owners, sellers, and heirs of a house and orchard in San Agustín de las Cuevas, a town in colonial Coyoacán. It later came under the jurisdiction of Tlalpan in the national period, where it remains today. An introduction summarizes its contents; followed by a bill of the sale of the house by the bachiller Fr. Ventura de Medina y Picaso to Diego Bravo de Monera in 1688. "Pulcinoelefante" is an Italian publishing house founded by Alberto Casiraghi (or Casiraghy).
The books are hand printed using movable types on the high-quality Hahnemühle paper produced in Germany. Annually "Pulcinoelefante" publishes hundreds of small plaquettes formed by a text (aphorism or short poem), accompanied by small engravings or original drawings made by artists. Each edition is published in a very small number of copies hors de commerce.

Single leaf (270 x 212 mm) with copper-engraved plate (198 x 147 mm); very lightly foxed, 2 small paper flaws (of which the larger 8 mm), but overall a very good copy.
Very rare engraved broadside advertisement for a Venetian chocolatier. An attractive print, the advertisement offers 'chioccolatta d'ogni sorte' for a variety of prices, beneath an internal view of Guado's premises in Calle Larga in San Marco. Set within an ornamental rococo frame with the shop's 'la nave' sign depicted above, the scene shows a wealthy clientele in a spacious chocolate-house, drinking hot chocolate, with beans being ground in the foreground.
OCLC shows no copies of the engraving. The original copper plate survives in the Civica Raccolta delle Stampe Achille Bertarelli, in Milan.

Princeton: Princeton University, 2003 Promotional poster printed in red and black on heavy cream paper for Morrison's reading from her novel LOVE. Council of Humanities and the Program in African-American Studies (November 4th, 2003) on the Princeton University campus at the Historic Alexander Hall in the Richardson Auditorium, a venue where Morrison who long taught at Princeton frequently appeared. This copy signed by Toni Morrison. Pin holes at the corners (three interiorly) and a faint crease to top edge, else in fine condition.

Paris: Saussine, 1865. Magnetic fortune telling board game, 21cm x 26cm. Constructed of painted wood and cardboard, significant wear, most notably to corners and extremities, the lid consists of the decorated top panel but has lost three of the four strengthening "lips" that would have firmly attached it to the base, although as a whole it is appreciably solid. A self-contained game in the form of a box with a painted glass and wood top with applied chromolithograph decoration, the magnetic blue bird moves beneath the window when a card and bone spinner with a metallic element is spun above it. The spinner has various fortune subjects written on it in French to "ask" the blue bird about. Once the bird stops spinning, its beak will be pointed at one of eight small circular lidded boxes affixed to the game surface (some of these are a trifle worn to the decorative paper covers, but still bright and attractive). San Francisco: The Downbeat Club, 1948. 1st Edition 1st Printing. No Binding. Good. Circa 1948/49. A table-card from the Downbeat club in Market Street, San Francisco advertising a residency by Billie Holiday and Willie Smith, the saxaphonist, which has been inscribed and autographed by Lady Day and also signed by musicians Willie Smith and Jerome Richardson. Smith later contributed to the album Lady Sings the Blues. Unfolded, the card measures approximately 9.5 inches by 5.75 inches. With printed red lettering on a pale yellow background. The card is in overall Good or better condition, with some light spots and small finger-marks/stains. There is one tiny pin-hole to each of the two top corners. The inscription/signatures are in ink and each are clear. Billie Holiday has written, "For Kell, Best always" and signed her name below. The signature is expansive and flowing. When published, the pamphlet was sent to newspapers and magazines across the Pacific Northwest and probably a few select places in California and the East Coast; most were likely tossed into the proverbial round file. An original, framed, four-sided piece of Mirage Music Ltd. sheet music for the 1968 Rolling Stones song 'Jumpin Jack Flash' by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. It is a rare piece of sheet music, but here all the rarer with Mick Jaggers signature. I can trace no other signed example.This was previously owned by one of the Biba Girls, the iconic 60s fashion shop and this is where is was signed by Mick Jagger.
