1697 1st ed Las Casas Spanish West Indies VOYAGES Cortez Conquistadors Torture

Bartolomé de las Casas was a 16th-century Spanish historian who published an important historical account of the discovery of West Indies by Spain. This book chronicled the first years of Spanish colonization in the New World; however, it did provide a view of the severe maltreatment of the local tribes in the Caribbean islands. He provides early information on Cuba, Nicaragua, Jamaica, and many other ports and islands. This work also provides details on the exploration and findings of Hernando Cortez!
This 1697 first French edition of 'The Discovery of the West Indies' was among the first books printed to expose the torture and oppression to Caribbean peoples. Casas was named as the Protector of the Indians for his role in seeking to end the cruelty.

Controversial manuscript on the expulsion of Jesuits from South America
["Ministro di Stato" (= Bernardo Tanucci (1698-1783)?].
Notizie Anecdote.
Italy (Naples?), 1759.
4°, 8 pp. Manuscript in black ink in a notarial hand on 18th century paper.
Ruthlessly anti-Jesuit manuscript, possibly by Bernardo Tanucci: prime minister of Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The text summarizes the events involving the Jesuits in the years 1755-1759, from the controversy over the Paraguayan Missions to the trials for the assassination of Joseph I of Portugal. This autograph is not signed but clues to the identity of the author can be found in a rare 1759 published analysis of the contents of this manuscript, titled Sposizione letteral delle notizie anecdote giustificative della condotta de' MM. RR. PP. Gesuiti nel Paraguai, e nel Portogallo per aggiungere al loro manoscritto di Napoli (Barcelona [= Naples?], Antonio Michele Cervellò). In the second edition of this work (1760, same publisher), editor Alfonso Nicolini… Read More

1519 Paolo Emili FRANCE De Rebus Gestis Badius FOLIO p Incunable Chronicle Kings

Paolo Emili was a 15th-century Veronese humanist known for his histories of France and the Gauls. First published in 1515 and appearing in multiple parts, "De Rebus Gestis Francorum" was written to chronicle the lives and reigns of the French kings from Pharamond through Charles VIII. However, Emili died in 1529 before he could complete the work and it was finished by numerous contributors into the early 17th-century.

This printing from Josse Badius was published around 1517-1519 as Badius did not publish any other editions of Emili after.

1690 Samuel Pepys 1ed State of Royal NAVY of England Glorious Revolution SHIPS

Samuel Pepys was a 17th-century English naval administrator and politician who is best-known for his diary. His diary was a daily journal account of his life, kept for nearly ten years. It is an important and thoroughly detailed account of Pepys's life as well as major British events and life in London from the second half of the 1600s.

Interestingly, only one work of Pepys was published during his lifetime. His 'State of the Royal Navy of England' was published in 1690 and covers the state of the Royal Navy leading up to the Glorious Revolution and his demands for change. Notable topics include:
· the naval interactions with commerce ships
· the costs of new ships in the navy
· methods of acquiring new ship hands
· how to ready ships
· and much more!

Pforzheimer says of this work:
"Upon this he lavished a great deal of thought and care. It represents a side of Pepys' life which… Read More
