An exceptionally good copy in the publisher's lilac wrappers printed in black; short tears are beginning to develop along the sides of the spine but they don't detract from the appearance of this remarkably early original paperback binding. Lectures delivered in Canterbury - personal recollections of the Crimea and a sketch of Montenegro and its history. In 1858 Wright was to write an outspoken pamphlet, England's Duty to England's Army, addressed to the Secretary of State in which he suggested many reforms in the terms and conditions of service.(For other books about the Crimean War please search my stock using the keyword crimean.)

Translated from the French by Thomas Holcroft ; the first English-language edition thus. viii, xxvii, Part I 241 pp, Part II 301 pp. Bound in full leather, original boards with new spine, all in dark brown; title and author on spine in gilt on red leather panel. Board tips restored, original end papers. A very nice copy. (Due to size/weight of this 2-volume set, an additional shipping charge will apply.).

Mild grubbiness, else VG.Gift inscription dated 1821 to front flyleaf. On the title page the name Capt Pococke has been added then scored through in pencil. Above the words 'sedond edition' the name Thomas Howell has been added. Though neither is correct.The Journal is usually attributed to Captain Thomas Pococke or Thomas Howell. Recent research, however has shown that Howell was the editor and not the author. G. London: Printed by T. Bensley, Bolt Court, 1808. Leather Bound. Good. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Folio. viii, 100 pages. The binding of the book measures 14 inches tall by 11 1/2 inches wide. Hardcover bound in early half red morocco with grey paper-covered boards. The binding is worn and bumped but sound. Some damping on the exterior of the front cover with part of the leather pushed back near the spine. Corners bumped and abraded. There is a dig in the leather on the spine near the headcap. Hinges rubbed but holding. A bookplate on the front pastedown is of "George E. R. Dalton" (George Edward Robert Dalton, Master Mariner) and is hand-dated 1906. The bookplate has a crest with a left-facing standing lion topped by a helmet and crown with the top of another left-facing lion above that.
