1925. Original photograph album. Very Good. Oblong, string-tied album of black cardstock leaves, 11" x 13", photographs mounted on 35pp, blanks at the rear. Bound in black, flexible boards with an embossed sailing ship and gilt lettering (Photo-Album) on the cover. Pasted in are 116 albumen and silver gelatin prints, ranging from small candids to 8 ½" x 10 ½" group portraits, a few fading, overall sharp and clean. Laid into the album are a Japanese news article, a small head-shot of an older gentleman, and a watercolor portrait (10" x 8 ¼") of a man's face. Most of the photographs in this album. circa 1895-1925, were taken in Mie-Ken (or "Mie prefecture"), part of the Kansai region on the main island of Honshu. The group and individual portraits reflect new social and economic developments and cultural norms that emerged during this period. This traditional tale, 'The Wonderful Tea Kettle', is an illustrated woodblock book telling the tale of an old priest and his desire to lead the Chanoyu ceremony. While in meditation, his tea kettle began to shake and out of it came a badger!

Rare volume on camellias from Kan'en Iwasaki's multi-volume botanical series Honzo Zufu (Iconographia Plantarum), originally compiled in 1828 and later published in 92 volumes. This volume, number 88 in the series, includes 10 pages of text and index of camellia species, and 47 color woodcuts of Camellia japonica varieties.Condition: Washi paper covers scuffed, but interior very clean, strong impressions of color plates with vivid color.Kan'en Iwasaki or Tsunemasa Iwasaki (1786–1842) was a Japanese botanist, zoologist and entomologist. His botanical studies were influenced by Johann Weinmann.

Woodblock reprint of two famous Japanese picture scrolls which recorded the unsuccessful Mongol invasions of Japan in the 13th century.The scrolls were originally drawn between 1275 and 1293 for the samurai Suenaga Takezaki to record his battlefield valor and deeds during Kublai Khan's attempted invasions of Japan. The scrolls depict the Battle of Bun'ei in 1274 and the Battle of Koan in 1281.
Complete in 3 volumes, with 66 pages with 56 color plates in vol. 1, 54 pages with 33 color plates in vol. 2, and 100 pages with 54 color plates in vol. 3. Edited by Beisai Kubota.Condition: paper covers slightly worn, a few pages browned (mostly Japanese text pages) but plates bright and vivid.

An interesting 19th century woodblock-print of 'The Ogasawara Encyclopedia of Etiquette' writing the rules of etiquette for Samurai prior to the Meiji Era. Ian Neary states,
"The Ogasawara school, known for its subdued style and elegance, published numerous books on the subject that included an etiquette book for standing and bowing, the familiar three-tiered Japanese bow of today, which were necessary for the first time in Meiji Japan with the Western-style architecture and standing culture."
This rare 1809 edition is written in the typical column handwritten format with furigana usage for easier reading with excellent illustrations throughout of different etiquette rules of Samurai bowing to each other, other Lords and Daimyo, tea ceremonies, present giving, and much more!

This three-volume set is number 1,151 of 2,000 numbered copies in a special edition. Appears unread. 974 plates and text illustrations; some in color. The Wikipedia article on Henri Vever (1854–1942) writes that the French jeweler was a collector of a broad range of fine art, including prints, paintings, and books of both European and Asian origin. By the 1880s, Vever had become one of the first Europeans to formally collect Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints.
