The top and bottom of the spine are no longer crisp and there is a previous owner's inscription on the front free endpaper. Reprint from the 1880s of ukiyo-e artist Masanobu Okumura's depiction of nightlife in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters in the Edo era.Masanobu Okumura (1686-1764) was a Japanese print designer, book publisher, illustrator and painter.This orihon concertina-style book includes 38 double-page illustrations of geisha with their maids and samurai customers, playing board games and cards, smoking tobacco pipes, playing shamisen, reading books, etc. One plate shows the artist Okumura painting a large screen. 38 woodblock prints printed in three colors on 76 pages bound in orihon concertina-style with decorative washi paper over boards.Condition: binding repaired with washi paper, interior bright and fresh with no spotting.

Early 20th-century reprint of Utagawa's famous book on Japanese women's fashions originally published in 1802.Volume 1 only of the 2 volume set.With 25 full-color woodblock prints depicting 12 scenes over double pages with different classes of women, 23 pages of Japanese text.Includes woodcuts of noble courtiers under cherry blossom, samurai wives relaxing, concubines, merchant women, servants at bathhouse, dancers, laundress, nursemaid, etc.Condition: blue embossed paper boards scuffed and discolored, but interior clean and bright, woodcuts free of foxing. Traditional Yotsume Toji four-hole stab binding stitched on the right-margin. Toyokuni Utagawa (1769-1825), was a grand master ukiyo-e print designer and woodblock artist, known for his portraits of kabuki actors.

Bar some slight bumps to tips of Vol V, all volumes in superb condition, with barely any signs of use, if at all. Wrangham was born into a wealthy English landowning family. His uncle, William Winkworth, and grandfather Stephen Winkworth, were both experts in Oriental arts, the latter among the co-founders of the Oriental Ceramic Society. Against this backdrop, he was to amass one of the great collections of Japanese material, especially strong in inro, lacquerware, and netsuke. Part IV is unusual in that it retains the dust jacket, which seems to have been issued only for this volume. Several pieces set record prices for the time, many of which still stand. A lady brings in a lacquer tray with the second course of a sumptuous New Year meal in three lacquered bowls to two noblewomen seated on the floor.
A scene from the series Chiyoda no o-oku (Inner Palace of Edo Castle), published Meiji 28-29 (1895-1896).
All the women wear elaborately embroidered silk kimono decorated with symbols of good luck: cranes, turtles and plums (right), fans and camellias (middle), and peonies (left).
The room is decorated with winter ikebana (probably a winter-blossoming camellia) and a shimenawa (a Shinto decoration made of foliage and paper) hanging from the alcove wall. A hibachi decorated with cranes is on the floor in front of the ladies.

Guide to Modern Japanese Woodblock Prints: 1900-1975 by Helen Merritt and Nanako Yamada Paperback, 1995, third print, published by University of Hawaii Press, x + 366 pages. Some scuffing to dust jacket, minor marking but quite clean. Slight edge-wear, a little creasing to corners. Damp staining to upper ends of first 70-ish pages, which has puckered them and the top edge of the front cover a little but they are not heavily marked. A little marking to bottom edges of pages. Fore-edges very clean. Page surfaces generally clean, no inscriptions, marginalia, underlining, etc. See pictures for more information.

A beautifully designed and illustrated book on the art of Japanese flower arrangement, or Ikebana. Author Seido Iwata is both a master of the traditional art of Ikebana as well as a contemporary offshoot she pioneered at her School of Seki-So-Ryu (School of the Rocks and the Flowers). Cover design is by famed Franco-Japanese Modernist artist Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita, the author's cousin.
No date, but probably published in the late 1950s, after the 1954 publication of a similar book by Iwata in Japan. 88 pages with numerous B&W and color images of flower arrangements.
This hardcover edition is in very good+ condition, with only some tanning on the spine, light bumping on board corners and internal separation of a small section of one of the internal pages from a red glassine cover sheet.
