Ithaca: Cornell University Press [0-8014-1488-1] 1982. (4to) 208pp. Very good plus in very good plus dust jacket. Frontispiece, black and white and color illustrations, map, glossary, bibliography, indices. The top and bottom of the spine are no longer crisp and there is a previous owner's inscription on the front free endpaper. "The stock subjects of Japanese prints - women, actors, and landscapes - have received much scholarly attention, but the warrior-prints have been somewhat neglected, chiefly because a full appreciation of them depends on knowledge of the legends and characters depicted. B. W. Robinson, a renowned Kuniyoshi scholar, fillls this need by telling the stories most frequently portrayed. Kuniyoshi was one of the most prolific of the Ukiyo-e artists, and in the descriptive catalogue of the warrior-prints, which forms the greater part of this volume, Robinson lists over 350 triptychs (large three-sheet compositions) and some 1,500 single-sheet scenes arranged in… Read More

Due to use the binding is slightly curved on the right side first page of the binding. Very good copy.; Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was one of the last great artists in the ukiyo-e tradition. Literally meaning "pictures of the floating world" ukiyo-e was a particular genre of art that flourished between the 17th and 19th centuries and came to characterize the Western world's visual idea of Japan. In many ways images of hedonism, ukiyo-e scenes often represented the bright lights and attractions of Edo (modern-day Tokyo): beautiful women, actors and wrestlers, city life, and spectacular landscapes. Though he captured a variety of subjects, Hiroshige was most famous for landscapes, with a final masterpiece series known as "One Hundred Famous Views… Read More

London: Bonhams, 2010. First Edition. Laminated Pictorial Boards. Near fine to Fine/very good. 4to (27cm). Bar some slight bumps to tips of Vol V, all volumes in superb condition, with barely any signs of use, if at all. Wrangham was born into a wealthy English landowning family. His uncle, William Winkworth, and grandfather Stephen Winkworth, were both experts in Oriental arts, the latter among the co-founders of the Oriental Ceramic Society. Against this backdrop, he was to amass one of the great collections of Japanese material, especially strong in inro, lacquerware, and netsuke. Part IV is unusual in that it retains the dust jacket, which seems to have been issued only for this volume. Several pieces set record prices for the time, many of which still stand. As a heavy set, please enquire for shipping rates to destinations outside the UK.

Description:
Very good triptych of a charming scene of court ladies celebrating New Year.
A lady brings in a lacquer tray with the second course of a sumptuous New Year meal in three lacquered bowls to two noblewomen seated on the floor.
A scene from the series Chiyoda no o-oku (Inner Palace of Edo Castle), published Meiji 28-29 (1895-1896).
All the women wear elaborately embroidered silk kimono decorated with symbols of good luck: cranes, turtles and plums (right), fans and camellias (middle), and peonies (left).
The room is decorated with winter ikebana (probably a winter-blossoming camellia) and a shimenawa (a Shinto decoration made of foliage and paper) hanging from the alcove wall. A hibachi decorated with cranes is on the floor in front of the ladies.
Chikanobu, 1838-1912, also known as Chikanobu Toyohara, Hashimoto or Youshu, was a prolific Japanese painter and printmaker of the Meiji era. He worked in many genres including battle scenes, historical pictures, beauty pictures, famous sites, portraits,… Read More
