Description:
1657 Lucius Florus History of Ancient Rome + Ampelius Liber Memorialis Salmasius

"Men of outstanding ability are more likely to lack the power of controlling their own people than of defeating an enemy in battle."
― Livy, The History of Rome

Florus was a Roman historian who lived during the 2nd-century AD. His history of Rome was collected by Livy, and mainly focuses on the foundation of Rome though the end of the B.C. era. The work is considered inaccurate, especially compared to Livy's much more popular and famous History of Rome.

This 1657 Elzevier edition of Florus was edited by the 17th-century French classist Claudius Salmasius. First appearing in 1638, this book not only includes Florus but also an edition of Lucius Ampelius's 'Liber Memorialis'. This work is an ancient index of 1st-century Roman history focusing on cosmography, mythology, and geography during the Republican period of Rome. Curiously, this is only the second known edition of Ampelius.

1902 1ed Doom King Acrisius Greek Mythology Perseus William Morris Illustrated

Acrisius was a lesser-known figure in Greek Mythology. Known primarily as the grandfather of Perseus, Acrisius was also the king of Argos. And while little has been written on King Acrisius, English author William Morris wrote a collection of classical myths and legends entitled 'The Earthly Paradise'. The story of Acrisius was included in this anthology and was published as a standalone work.
This 1902 edition of Morris' 'Doom of King Acrisius' was published in New York with impressive pseudo-erotic illustrations by Edward Burne-Jones.

Thomas Wright was a 19th-century English historian known for his works in archaeology, history of Britain, and commentary on English literature. One of his lesser-known works was 'A History of Caricature and Grotesque in Literature and Art'. In this book, Wright uncovers and discusses aspects of various forms of art in literature and tradition including caricature art in ancient civilizations.
While the contents of this book are truly extensive, some of the most interesting include the medieval depictions of dragons, Reynard the Fox, witchcraft, Erasmus's Praise of Folly, the famed Dance of Death, and much, much more.

Description:
A beautiful copy of the 1975 Weiser edition. Dr Moses Gaster possessed the original text which was potentially a 13th/14th century source (possibly earlier). This was a Hebrew book of magic, the text of which Gaster first published, along with translation and commentary in 1896. His English translation here is followed by the original Hebrew text. Gaster's original document is now in the British Library. This is the third impression from 1975, published by Weiser. Pages are remarkably clean and bright, not a single apparent mark, crease, inscription, tanning or foxing. If anything the top edges have the slightest of age wear. Boards are tight and clean. The very slightest fraying at the base of the spine and a miniscule amount of bending in the bottom corners. But all in all a remarkable copy. Please see all photos, which are of the actual copy for sale. This book is rare in any condition but exceedingly so in this state. No DJ, as published

Description:
An exceedingly rare, lovely copy of the 1970 Rider/Aquarian edition (first thus) of Lewis Spence's classic book on Atlantis. With a very good unclipped dust jacket, and pages which are immaculate. Spence was a Scottish folklorist and occultist, and became well known for his works on folklore, myths, legends and the occult in general. A well educated journalist, Spence researched and wrote about a range of related themes, and while he's become seen as a forerunner to many more modern writers of this ilk, he was more serious and disciplined in his approach. He looks at Atlantis and its arcane traditions of magic, alchemy, astrology and witchcraft. Largely dismissed by some as pseudo-science, Spence's book was nevertheless an important contribution to populist occult and esoteric literature. This copy is exceptionally good. Pages are bright, crisp and clean, pretty much immaculate. NOT ex-library. NO inscriptions, markings, highlighting or notes. No foxing or noticeable browning. Fore and top edges are… Read More
