[New York: The Intimate Gallery], 17 April 1927.. [4]pp. Folded leaflet, 28 x 21.7cm. Fine. First edition. An important document in the history of The Intimate Gallery and John Marin's career, being Stieglitz's own sortie into the fray of opinion surrounding the sale of a group of Marin's paintings to Duncan Phillips in December of 1926. In brief, Stieglitz told several intimates that Phillips had paid $6,000 for Marin's BACK OF BEAR MOUNTAIN. Word leaked out to the public, Phillips claimed that the figure was inaccurate, and he and Stieglitz exchanged assertions and denials. The entire episode is summarized on pp.282-3 of Lowe's STIEGLITZ A MEMOIR / BIOGRAPHY.

Gorgeous photographs from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, taken primarily in Memphis. Withers photographed the clubs, dance halls, auditoriums, recording studios, churches and streets of Memphis, home to one of the most vibrant music scenes in America. Subjects include W.C. Handy, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, a young Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, James Brown, Charlie Pride, Rufus Thomas, Staples Singers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Ike and Tina Turner, Isaac Hayes and many more. Incomparable collection of photographic images, beautifully presented. Out of print and rare signed copy. Barely noticeable curling at top of dust jacket necessitates dj rating of Near Fine.

Artsept was a little-known periodical published in 1963 by the writer and film critic Raymond Bellour. Due to financial problems only three issues were published. With an editorial board consisting in particular of Raymond Bellour, Jean Cayrol, Armand Gatti, Jean-Louis Leutrat, Jean Michaud and Bernard Pingaud, Artsept's mission was to manifest film as the seventh art, embracing all other arts in their discourse. Each issue was dedicated to a specific topic, the first one to "real cinema", the second to "cinema and truth", and the last one to "love".

On the cover of the first issue of Artsept appear the names of Cayrol, Colpi, Durand, Gatti, Marker, Resnais, and Varda. This reads like the "Who's Who" of the Left Bank Group and already indicates a different approach to film than André Bazin's famous Cahiers du Cinéma. Tipped-in to front is a compliment slip from Émile Wenz-Chaponnière. Émile was a pioneer of aerial photography in France through his use of kites. His work is referenced in this book. 350, xii pp. 136 illustrations in text, plus 10 unnumbered plates (some fold-out). 185 x 125 mm (7¼ x 5 inches). . Edition originale, cartonnée en toile jaune, avec impression rouge et noire sur les plats. Les planches et les planches sont toutes en bon état, mais les pages sont légèrement vieillies. Ricou Browning gained fame as playing "The Creature", aka Gill-man, in the cult horror film classic "Creature From the Black Lagoon".
