London: Spring Books, [1956]. Folio. Original buff, heavy-grain cloth, titles to spine and Stegosaurus design to upper board in brown. With the dust jacket. 60 lithographic plates of which 31 are in colour. Lower corner of the binding knocked, which has also slightly creased the corner of the text block and the jacket, spine rolled. A very good copy in the bright jacket that is lightly rubbed at the extremities with a few nicks and short closed splits. First English language edition, first impression of this vibrantly illustrated work, originally published in Prague under the title Tiere der Urzeit in the same year. Rare in the dust jacket in such nice condition. Between the 1930s and 1960s "the foremost painter of dinosaur restorations was Zden k Burian (1905-1981). His canvasses were used to illustrate a number of popular books on prehistoric life by Joseph Augusta, and in the late 1950s and 1960s these were translated into English and widely circulated. Description:
London: Groombridge & Sons Ten volumes (of 12 published), small thick octavo, all edges gilt, original cloth, with a full complement of 64 colour printed plates and 55 tinted plates, plus many dozens of text engravings, remarkably clean internally with just the very occasional mark or small stain. The cloth bindings are original, but changed in colour and style during the course of publication and are slightly worn overall; the first five volumes are faded and bleached, the upper cover of Volume XI is stained, the spines of the last five volumes are wrinkled, and Volume VII is slightly weak at the front and rear hinges; Volumes I & IV are cracked at the front and rear hinges. Despite any faults mentioned, I feel that the internal condition is exceptional, as is the size of this run - an almost complete set - which is very unusual. VERY SCARCE. A heavy set - extra postage will be necessary. [The Intellectual Observer was a reconfigured version of the discontinued Recreative Science, but as its… Read More

Description:
This book has some minor wear to covers, some markings first inner pages by previous owner. Spine intact, some wear. Very good shape considering its age. "Mary Kingsley's "Travels in West Africa" has become a classic, and deservedly so. Her story is remarkable. In the 1890s, unmarried and no longer having to care for her parents, Kingsley decides she should travel in "the tropics" and sets off for "West Africa" (i.e., the West coast of Central Africa). She travels as a scientist, collecting fish specimens, and finances her travels by trading along the way--but mostly she travels for the love of adventure and to satisfy an appetite for the unknown. "Travels in West Africa" is a treasure trove of information about Atlantic-coast Central Africa in the late 1800s. The last third of "Travels in West Africa" consists of three long chapters on fetish customs. Although she lacks a systematic view of the role of fetishes and other spiritual tokens in the cultures she met, her depiction of their impact on… Read More
