Description:
The German Government (no publisher indicated), 1940 (n.d.). English-language edition, only printing. Paperback. This is a rare, extremely well-preserved, and fascinating wartime Nazi propaganda piece ridiculing Churchill's wartime alliance of convenience with Stalin. It was produced by the Germans specifically to help recruit captured British soldiers to the Britisher Freikorps, the SS unit made up of British troops. This English language edition was distributed to British POWs. Versions are known in Croatian, French, German, Norwegian, and Swedish, but by far the most important and scarce is the English language version. The format is newspaper cartoons critical of Stalin on each right hand page with notes and Churchill quotes critical of Stalinist Russia on opposing pages. The effect is a stinging contrast between Churchill's wartime alliance of necessity with his long history of ardent anti-communist sentiment. The book measures 8 5/8 x 6 inches, is 110 pages long, and is bound in… Read More

Description:
1940. Unbound. Near Fine. A collection of 110 loose black and white and sepia-toned photographs of Nazi soldiers from 1935 until about 1942. The images range in size from 2¼" x 2¼ to 3¾" x 5¼" with some captions on the versos in German. All pictures are near fine or better with some age toning, curling, and remnants from being affixed in a photo album. The photographs depict members of the Wehrmacht engineering corps beginning in the mid-1930s and continuing through World War II. The scenes include soldiers cleaning weapons, marching through fields and town squares, and one captioned "metal working" that shows soldiers fixing bicycles. The young men are pictured celebrating Christmas in 1937, posing at fancy dinners, dancing with children, and playing cards. Swastikas can be seen throughout, along with a photo of one man's closet with a portrait of Adolf Hitler displayed in the center. The assemblage shows the military career of a Nazi soldier through the war covering training, military… Read More

Description:
London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1927. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed British first edition, first printing of the fourth volume of Churchill's monumental history of the First World War. A quarter of a century before the Second World War endowed him with lasting fame, Winston Churchill played a uniquely critical, controversial, and varied role in the “War to end all wars”. The events of these 1916-1918 volumes, of which this is Part II, include Churchill's time at the Front following his political exile and his subsequent return to the Cabinet. hough the U.S. first edition of The World Crisis preceded the British, many consider the British edition aesthetically superior, with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. Unfortunately, the original dust jackets are quite scarce and the smooth navy cloth of the British first editions proved quite susceptible to wear, the contents prone to spotting and toning. Particularly scarce… Read More

The Polish government in exile announced to the Allied countries of Europe, together with the USA and Soviet Russia, that Nazi Germany was not only exterminating German Jews but also Jews from across occupied Poland. This pamphlet describes the workings of the Warsaw Ghetto and the targets set by the Nazis for the numbers of Jews to be eliminated, together with the various methods employed for the killing of Jews. Description:
Stamford Connecticut: The Overbrook Press, 1943. Limited Edition. Hardcover. This handsome and scarce limited edition of Churchill's 19 May 1943 address to the U.S. Congress was produced for Members of Congress by Frank Altschuls Overbrook Press. This was Churchill's second address to Congress, seventeen long months of war having passed in the interval since his first, just after Pearl Harbor. Churchill's address came days after the Allies' critical victory in North Africa. Condition is very good minus. The black paper-covered boards are only lightly scuffed and blemished. The red front cover label remains bright, clean, and fully intact. The contents show almost no spotting and no previous ownership marks. We note customary transfer browning to the endsheets from the pastedown glue. A faint, unobtrusive moisture stain affects a maximum area of roughly 3 inches wide by .75 inches deep of the upper left margins through p.12. Light spotting appears confined to the inner blank margins at p.12-13… Read More

Description:
London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1938. First Edition, only printing. Hardcover. This book is the precursor to Churchill’s great war speeches, the first edition, only printing. This particular copy is increasingly scarce thus, in the first issue dust jacket. This copy is very good in a very good minus dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is beautifully square, clean, bright, and tight with sharp corners and vivid spine gilt. We note only a hint of sunning at the spine tips. The contents retain a crisp, unread feel. Trivial spotting appears confined to the endpapers, half-title, and the blank frontispiece recto. The sole previous ownership markings are initials and a surname, neatly and diminutively inked on the upper right half-title recto. The fore and bottom edges are clean apart from modest age-toning. The blue-stained top edges are uniformly dulled. This copy would merit “very good plus” or better if not for a missing front free endpaper. This has been neatly but fully removed, so that the… Read More

A near fine, bright set of books with some neat annotation to a handful of pages in volume one. Publishers black cloth with gilt lettering to the spines. Previous owner bookplate inside the first four volumes. In the publishers original dustwrappers with the same design background. Fine and clean wrappers with the spine lettering, including the red volume numbers and titles, vibrant and bright on all six volumes. Uncommon in such good condition.
