Description:
London : Rivington and Co, 1799 A fair copy of Edward Donovan's work on British Shells, in contemporary half morocco bindings with 180 hand coloured plates. Donovan is justly famed for his accurately observed and delicate illustrations of wildlife - mainly birds, insects, fish and shells. He took advantage of the large numbers of specimens being brought back to museums and private collections from voyages and expeditions. British Shells was issued in parts between 1799 and 1803 and subscribers would have been able to bind their copies as they chose. Donovan's works had limited distribution because of their expense, and have become scarcer as many sets have been broken up for their plates. This set is half morocco, with gilt lines to the spine and gilt titles, volume numbers and dates, and has marbled boards. The page edges have been minimally trimmed. The bindings are worn but sound - so the morocco is losing its surface on the spine joints and corners and there is general edge wear. The… Read More

Description:
Complete set of the 53 copperplate engravings only from this seminal work of microscopy by Jan Swammerdam (1637-1680), the pioneering Dutch biologist. Swammerdam was one of the outstanding comparative anatomists of the seventeenth century. His most remarkable work was in the field of insect anatomy, which he undertook in order to disprove Aristotle's claims that insects lack internal anatomy, develop by metamorphosis and arise from spontaneous generation. By refining his techniques of micro-dissection and injection, Swammerdam was able to illustrate for the first time the complex internal structures of insects, including their reproductive organs. These observations are "indubitably the foundation of our modern knowledge of the structure, metamorphosis and classification of insects" (Cole, p. 285).Biblia naturae, Swammerdam's major work, was published 57 years after his death by Herman Boerhaave, who assembled it from unpublished manuscript materials integrated with a slightly revised version of… Read More

Scarce four-volume set of the plate volumes to Felix-Edouard Guérin-Méneville's Iconographie du règne animal de G. Cuvier, (Iconography of the Animal Kingdom by G. Cuvier). Lacking the text volume as often.
Total of 440 (of 448) handcoloured copperplate engravings and two engraved portraits of Cuvier and Latreille (lacking the portrait of Guerin)
The plates were printed and hand-coloured by Remond, engraved by Jean-Dominique-Étienne Canu and Eugene Giraud after illustrations by Edouard Travies, Felix-Edouard Guérin-Méneville and Louis Victor Bévalet
The stipple engraved plates very finely coloured by hand, finished with gum arabic, some fish plates highlighted with silver.
The series was a complement to Georges Cuvier and Pierre André Latreille's Le Regne Animal which was published without illustrations until the famous disciples' edition. Guerin aimed to "draw from life the most remarkable species of each genus of animals," and often depicted species that had not been previously figured.… Read More
